Don’t Be Afraid To Invest When Markets Are At Record Highs

Don’t be afraid to invest when markets are at record highs. You can wait the rest of your life to start investing because you think stocks are too expensive. It can be especially hard when the stock market keeps hitting record highs. But, since the market’s long term trend is up, it has to hit new highs.

I have a good friend who used to spend most of his time on the sidelines (in cash) because he was constantly worried that stocks were too expensive and the market was destined to crash soon (because it kept hitting new records). He finally listened to me and decided to invest all of his money in the stock market and leave it there (while regularly adding more cash through payroll deduction).

The stock market frequently looks too expensive, so if you wait for it to look cheap, you may never buy stocks. That would be stupid. You would miss out on years and years of gains. And when stocks started to look cheap, you might be too paralyzed to buy them because the news might be downright awful. Often that’s when stocks are cheap; when the news is bad. When the news is awful, you might decide to wait to buy stocks until the news is better. But, when the news is better, stocks may again be hitting record highs, which deters value seekers like you from buying stocks.

So, what’s a person to do? Avoid trying to time the market. That is what you are doing when you try to decide if it’s a great time to buy stocks. It’s unlikely that you will know when it’s a great time to buy or that you will have the guts to buy if you decide it is a great time. It is much better to just buy all the time. If you just buy every week, come hell or high water, you won’t have to worry about whether it’s a good time to buy. And that turns out to be the best approach; buying all the time and staying in the stock market all the time.

So get started now. Start buying stocks regularly and just keep buying them. Either enroll in a workplace retirement savings plan or start an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), but either way, contribute money from every paycheck and just keep doing it until you retire. You won’t have to worry about whether it’s a good time to buy because buying will be done automatically. You won’t have to make any decisions.

So, don’t be afraid to invest at stock market highs. Take yourself out of the decision-making process by automating your investing. Let the market worry about itself. All you need to do is set up a way to automatically and regularly invest in the stock market. It will be the smartest thing you’ve ever done!
