Someone asked me if she should start a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA. I said, “both”. The Roth allows you to make withdrawals without paying taxes because you paid taxes upfront. Sweet. But I also like the traditional IRA because it allows you to save more money upfront since you don’t pay taxes until you make withdrawals. What is most important is not which IRA you start, but that you get started now. So flip a coin to determine which IRA to start, but make darned sure that you start today. What’s important is that you don’t wait. It is far better to make a few mistakes getting started than to never start at all.
Do you have an IRA? If so, how did you decide which type to open? Are you confident that you will accumulate enough wealth to retire comfortably?
