My friend, Ann, has a dozen children. It’s highly unusual to have a dozen children these days, but it was not uncommon 100 years ago when families needed all the children they could get to help work on the farm. The cost to raise a child in 2022 is $272,049. The total cost to raise all of Ann’s twelve children is $3,264,588. That number might seem unbelievable, but just consider the cost of education. Four years at a private college can cost over $340,000 ($85,000 per year). It is a wonder that anyone still has children, given how expensive it is to raise them. Obviously, people still have children, but they have fewer on average than they did 50 or 100 years ago. In 1800 women had an average of seven children. By 2020 the average number of children per family was 1.93. Although the cost to raise 1.93 children ($525,055) sounds steep, it sure beats the cost to raise a dozen ($3,264,588).
How many children do you have, if any? If you have children, did you consider the cost of raising children before you had them? Did you consider the cost of education?
